Nursing is a demanding career, and the Associate Degree Nursing Degree Programs are tailored to meet the demands of the profession. Provider of care is the lowest capacity in which a nurse can perform. It involves providing primary care to patients in a medical facility. On the other hand, manager of care position allows the associate degree nurse to act as a lead nurse while providing guidance and oversight on issues like finance and resource utilization. Member of the discipline of nurses serves the function of ensuring that nursing practitioners follow the stipulated code of conduct while performing their day to day activities. The action plan is designed in line with VMOSA blueprint. Here, the vision, mission, objectives, strategies and the Action plan elements are highlighted with emphasis on essential components. The action plan answers the questions; what? Who?, When? and what resources? Finally, it outlines the communication process of informing the interested parties. The conclusion affirms that the three roles in which an associate degree nurse can perform are interrelated, and they tie into each other on most aspects.
Three Role Behaviors for the Associate Degree Nurse
Nursing is an extremely demanding career, and its training involves well-tailored role behaviors that those intending to practice must exhibit. The Associate Degree Nursing Programs are developed by the National League for Nursing Council of Associate Degree Nursing Competencies Task Force (2000), and they aim at ensuring that only competent nurses are sent out to practice. This article will define provider of care, manager of care, and a member of the nursing discipline council as the roles to be accomplished by the associate nursing degree professional. Finally, it will develop an action plan towards performing the said functions.
A provider of care behaviors are those characteristics that allow the associate degree nurse to act by assisting patients in a health facility. The interventions provided are primarily dependent on nursing theory and research, coupled with past experiences . In essence, the provider of care endeavors to share in the pain of the client by offering them treatment and reducing the suffering that comes with ill health or disability or death for the family members (Naylor, & Kurtzman, 2010, p.896). The nurse achieves the overall objective of care by being protective, compassionate and nurturing. Moreover, the provider of care must be in a position to build trust in the client by upholding the client’s cultural values and belief system (Anderson, Hilaire, & Flinter, 2012, para.11-15). The ultimate goal of intervention is to ensure that the care seeker improves and that the process of recovery is accelerated.
Second, the role of manager of care requires that the nursing practitioner ensures that the processes are efficient. In principle, the manager of care must ensure that there is a proper use of human resources, physical capital goods, fiancés and technology tools (Dyess, Sherman, Pratt & Chiang-Hanisko, 2016, para.17). To be efficient, the manager of care must plan, organize, direct and control each and every process. Moreover, the nurse responsible for managing care must enhance collaboration between him and his peers so as to increase the efficiency of the operations (Dyess, Sherman, Pratt & Chiang-Hanisko, 2016, para.22). Nurse leader role is an emerging position in the medical field, and it requires creativity and dedication since there are few examples of exemplary performances for benchmarking.
Lastly, it is important to note that every profession has a code of professional conduct and as such, practitioners are expected to become members. In practice, nursing professionals are expected to be committed to the course of providing nursing help during their productive years (Matthews, 2012, para.3). There is an established legal and ethical, regulatory framework that sets the standards of ethical conduct of a nurse and by joining the association; an individual agrees to conform to the very standards that establish the organization (Matthews, 2012, para.8). Members of the Discipline of nurses are responsible for litigating in matters that relate to the professional and ethical conduct of members. The following section outlines a detailed action plan that I intend to use in order to accomplish the three nursing behavior role.
My vision as I undertake the Associate Nursing Degree is To become the most effective nursing practitioner within my areas of influence by exhibiting high levels of compassion, patience, courage, and empathy. On the same note, my mission is to respond to the health needs of a culturally, socially and ethnically diverse society by executing my functions in the most efficient and nondiscriminatory manner for a healthy nation. My mission supports and sustains the goals of the Nursing Associate Degree program by implementing patient-centered approaches to healthcare provision and grounded in untainted clinical practice. These two basic elements define my overall objective as I get into practice.
In the capacity of provider of care, I will endeavor to achieve the following objectives; (1) To ensure efficient diagnosing and treating of patients with both mild and acute conditions, (2) To ensure proper physical examination of all patients followed by accurate documentation of their health history, (3) To ensure proper prescription of age-specific physical therapy and rehabilitation, (4) To ensure prescription of pharmacologic treatments are in line with state standards, (5) To ensure that specialty services are provided to both adults and children, and (6) To ensure proper counseling and education of patients to avoid common illness. The objectives will be achieved using the following strategies; (1) Consulting the nursing practice manuals from time to time in case of doubt, (2) Seeking help from more experienced nurses, (3) Cooperation with other nurses and management staff, (4) Attending in-service courses. Finally, the action plan will specifically aim at changing how nurses relate with patients in a careering and professional manner. Members of my team will strive towards this end. The resources required include Fees for the refresher course, and nursing practice manual. This information will be shared with fellow nurses and the Manager of care. Current patients will also be informed of the change in mode of practice.
In the role of Manager of care, my objectives will be; (1) To mentor and couch nursing staff under my control, (2) To pragmatically monitor patient care for quality, (3) To take full charge of the financial control responsibility by ensuring high levels of integrity of the finance department, (4) To align with the organizational objectives by enhancing channels of communication for efficiency. The objectives will be achieved through application of the following strategies; (1) Opening communication channels, (2) Engaging clinical staff on a one-on-one basis, (3) Open door policy of management, (4), Regular training of nursing staff, (5) Providing incentives to best performing. Finally, the action plan will involve redefining the role of Manager of Care as a friend and mentor, and I will be assisted by Nurses under my command. The resources required will include Approved financial budgets, and a separate office. This plan will be communicated to all nurses within my control.
Lastly, the Member of the discipline of Nurses will present me with a chance to practice as a paralegal. The two objectives for this role are; (1)To ensure that nurses follow the professional code of conduct, (2) To effectively handle any cases of malpractice by providing the best litigation options. These two objectives will be achieved by way of; (1) creating a direct line of communication for irate members of the public by providing a hotline, (2) Attending paralegal studies to help understand issues that relate to law. The role will ensure that nurses are professional and avoid any form of malpractice that amounts to the tort of negligence. Nurses under my jurisdiction will be assessed, and approved budgets, legal experts, and Fees for paralegal training are the requisite resources. Communication will be directed towards Nurses and members of the public.
In conclusion, the three roles of provider of care, manager of care and member of the discipline of nurses are interrelated in that one is the precursor to the other. Provider of care performs those roles that are the essential foundations of a nursing unit. On the other hand, the manager of care role ensures that nursing practice is carried out according to some accepted codes of conduct. Lastly member of the discipline of nurses works to ensure public confidence in the work of nurses. An action plan is the only way an associate nurse can ensure success in all the areas of expertise.
